More on the Interim Restrictions - McMansion Ordinance
from Felicia Adams, RNA Co-presidentNeighbors,
As most of you now know, last Thursday the Austin City
Council voted 6-0 to pass the interim regulations only on 1st reading only. At
the meeting this Thursday, they will continue the public hearing and finalize
the ordinance (2nd and 3rd readings).
Here is a graphic that explains the
new interim restrictions (McMansion Ordinance) done by the Pemberton Heights
NA.
Take
a look and understand just what these interim restrictions mean. Many of those
who originally opposed the ordinance, after learning that their projects could
be built as designed, changed their thinking once they actually understood what
the restrictions meant.
At last Thursday's public hearing before the
Council vote, over 350 people signed up to speak. About 260 of them signed up
to speak in opposition. I think 94 signed up supporting the new interim
restrictions; mostly neighborhood associations and regular folks, many of whom
had been personally affected by having a too-large residential structure near
them. You can be certain that the home builders, developers, and Realtors are
arming the troops as we speak and will be back this week stronger than ever.
There is considerable pressure to severely weaken, or more to the point, to gut,
the ordinance on Thursday. These are some large organizations that can mobilize
thousands of people to act! The Home Builders Association is claiming that this
large turnout in opposition demonstrates that the Council is operating without a
mandate from the citizens of Austin.
This is an important issue for
neighborhoods all over Central Austin. Our City Council is taking a big risk
during this election year to help us preserve our central city neighborhoods.
Something that we've been asking for help with for years. They've made a daring
move and the neighborhoods need to make it known that the Council has our
support. It is imperative that we let them know that they are moving in the
right direction. Almost no one, not even most of the developers that spoke in
opposition of the ordinance, thinks that building out of scale McMansions on
small lots is a good idea.
Get the word out! LARGE turnout needed at
Thursday's Council meeting. And DO THESE 3 THINGS:
1. Send an EMAIL to
Council to let them know that the citizens of Austin do support the ordinance.
