McCallum Opens Season On a Down Note

submitted by Tom Davis

The sixth annual Taco Shack Bowl opened the season with the McCallum Knights taking on their long time rival Anderson Trojans. At the end of the night, McCallum posted a season opening loss to the Anderson Trojans, 44 to 20.

McCallum took the opening kickoff and began their initial march down the field, only to be stopped by the Trojans recovering a Mac fumble. Anderson took their opening series and capped it off with a touchdown. McCallum answered the call and went down the field behind the passing of Kevin Lusson and the receiving of Van Franks and Jordan Cole. The Knights tied up the scoreboard 7 all. Anderson returned the favor when they coughed up the football after Jamal Herring sacked the Trojan quarterback. Vance Robinson recovered the fumble for the Knights.

The Knights were threatening on the Trojan 22 yard line, when rain delayed the game for about one and half hours with 1:11 left to play in the first quarter. Upon resuming play, the Knights threw a 22-yard pass from Lusson to Cole for the lead, 13-7.

The Trojans didn’t seem too concerned when they took the kickoff and marched down the field to score. Anderson scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 24 to 13 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Knights offense and defense both sputtered in the third quarter allowing Anderson to post 14 more points on the scoreboard while McCallum was unable to muster anything.

Both teams showed the effects of the late hour, with each team posting one more touchdown. Anderson scored on a 2 yard run while McCallum on a 23-yard pass from backup quarterback Clete Donovan to A.J. Audain.

With this win, Anderson evened up the Taco Shack Bowl series at 3 games apiece.

Next week, McCallum takes on their second 5A opponent when they do battle with the Austin High Maroons. Anderson will take on another 4A rival in Lanier.
