Good Turnout for Neighborhood Safety Block Captain Meeting

Block_captain_meeting On Monday night, a group of 20 residents met with Officer Richard Vargas for training as block captains. The meeting was held at Genuine Joe's coffee house on Anderson Ln. Laura DiCarlo organized the meeting and is the point person for the Allandale block captain network. She will be conducting another block captain training next week for those who could not make it to Monday's meeting. The next step is for the block captains to get a letter to their neighbors introducing themselves as the block captain and to organize a block  get-together. At the get-together they will go over the Neighborhood Watch program, exchange contact information, and discuss safety concerns.  The goal of the Neighborhood Safety Committee is to have a block captain on every block. If you are interested, contact Laura at: lhdicarlo@yahoo.com.

Reminder: Super Sale is May 3rd.

Supersale_2 The Super Sale is an annual event in which all Allandale residents are encouraged to participate by having a garage or yard sale on the same day. An ad is placed in the Austin American Statesman, and the event is promoted online and via flyers. You do the rest!

Neighbors from across the ‘hood are participating!   There will be lots of shoppers going from sale to sale, so whether your sale is big or small.. this is a great opportunity to convert some clutter into cash!

Not having a sale?  Spend a day strolling the neighborhood, greeting neighbors, and maybe bag a bargain while you’re at it.

Email supersale08@fitmom.info to sign-up.  Include your address and a brief description of what you will have for sale.

Hey Cupcake!

Heycupcake_004 Hey Cupcake will be opening up on Burnet Rd next to Austin Plumbing Supply soon. I spoke with Wes Hurt, owner of Hey Cupcake, on Friday and he said he hopes to be open in about three months. He asked that I not go into too many of the details at this time but said a coffee shop is being considered as part of the mix. He is very excited about the location and being in Allandale. You can read more about Hey Cupcake and the cupcake business in Austin from an Austin American-Statesman article written in January, "Cupcake businesses thrive in Austin," by Kathy Adams. According to the article, Wesley Hurt is a young entrepreneur who opened up a cupcake stand near the university a little of a year ago. He relocated the stand, a silver Airstream trailer, to South Congress in September. It's doing well!

Update from ANA Drainage Committee

Drainageimage_2 At Thursday's ANA EC meeting, Mark Price, chair of the ANA Drainage Committee, reported that the plans for addressing the flooding problem on White Rock have changed. Instead of installing a holding pond up behind Burnet Storage, the city is now looking at installing a drainage pipe under Bull Creek that will go from White Horse Trail to south of Northland/2222 and drain water into Shoal Creek. Here is a link to Mark's blog with the latest information on the project: "ANA Drainage Committee including a link to a larger version of the adjacent map."

Farmers Market Location up for sale again

Brentwood_002 According to an article in today's Statesman, "Farmers market site for sale again," by M.B. Taboada, the current owner of the Farmers Market property Paz Dhody, who bought it from the County back in September has it up for sale. His redevelopment plans never materialized and Brentwood Tavern and Dog Almighty are no longer there. County Commissioner Sara Eckhardt's says the restrictive covenants are still in place, i.e., no fast-food drive-in restaurants or strip clubs, but other than that, the County has no say over what goes there.

Frisco's in the Statesman

As you probalby know, Frisco's is moving from their current location across from HEB on Burnet Rd to a new location on Burnet Rd where Cura's was. This will all be taking place mid-to-late May. The Austin American-Statesman did a nice write-up on Frisco's in today's paper, "Menu Full of Memories," by Dale Rice, including a bit of history on the Nighthawk chain and Frisco's. Walgreen's will be taking over the location. The move is a good thing for Frisco's. It allows them to stay in the neighborhood and get a bigger place. Also, check out the video of the story here.

AISD Trustees Call for May 10 School Bond Election

Julie Cowan

The AISD Board of Trustees has called an election for May 10, to vote on three bond propositions that would benefit children in the Austin school district.  This bond package is intended to be limited in scope:  it addresses overcrowding at those schools in the district at 125%+ capacity, boosts technology for students and teachers, responds to health and safety mandates from outside entities, and supports academic achievement.

Volunteers turned out for It's May Park Day

Happy Day, both clean-ups were a success. More volunteers, more achievements, and substantial improvements in Northwest Park and along Great Northern.

Along Great Northern Volunteers cleared brush along the bike path by the little league fields, planted a crepe-myrtle, marked the existing crepe myrtles, removed debris from the street, and picked up trash.

At Northwest Park, they cleared algae from the surface of the pond, removed trash from the island and painted sign-posts and the detention wall railing.

Electric Vehicles in Allandale

Nathan Dooley

Zaptruck Electric cars are trendy, but are they useful in our neighborhood?
At some point in the last several months, you may have noticed a pair of blue three-wheeled trucks parked in a driveway on Shoal Creek Boulevard. This is Rhonda and Michael Hall’s house, where they’ve lived for the last seven years, along with their two young children and a 19-year-old who recently moved out on his own.

Rhonda and Michael drive these matching electric two-seater trucks. Over the past year, they’ve also used an electric sedan (yes, it seats four) and another model of electric truck—all from Rhonda’s brother’s ZAP (Zero Air Pollution) dealership in San Antonio.

Where: Northwest Recreation Center, 2913 Northland Drive

It's My Park Day - This Saturday

Impdwithapfsm_2 Whew! Things are moving fast. We met with Parks and Recreation this morning, and they made a very generous offer of supplies to work in Northwest Park.

To accomodate the change, we are moving the Shoal Creek/2222 clean up to Northwest park. (don't worry, we'll do the greenbelt for the summer or fall clean-up)

NW Park should be a lot of fun, we'll get to paint, mess around with the pond, and clean a playscape. There is something for everyone! (what we really need are some canoes/boats, net-thingys, and a  plank... email me off list)

Allan McMurtry

The attorneys for Allandale have filed a petition before the District Court in Austin, Texas seeking payment of part of our legal fees as they relate to our lawsuit.  We have incurred expenses due to the claim filed against us by Lincoln Properties and have filed to be recompensed for those expenses.

Celebrate Allandale 2008

65_music_listeners The 2nd Annual Celebrate Allandale picnic has come and gone. Once again it was a great day in the park with friends and neighbors. The entertainment was outstanding - the McCallum Steel Band was incredible and Belville Outfit is the band to catch now before they become big stars drawing big crowds. Celebrate Allandale had it all: good food, happy children, and the perfect mix of weather, setting, and events that made for a delightful Sunday afternoon in the park. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED PUT IT TOGETHER! A special thanks to Mary Jean Matus who did a superb job of orchestrating and working the event and to Joe Reynolds for his work before, during, and when it was all over. A number of volunteers contributed to the event. It was truly a community event. Celebrate Allandale shows off Allandale and what  a great neighborhood it is.  Click here to see additional photos from the picnic.

Changes to VMU Ordinance Proposed

submitted by Steven Zettner

Developers, neighborhood activists and City officials all proposed changes to the Commercial Design Standards and VMU ordinance at a review meeting held March 28 at City Hall.

Council Member Brewster McCracken moderated the meeting, the first of several which will attempt to refine the ordinance one year after it went into effect.  Any changes proposed to City Council will require full consensus from all meeting participants. The next meeting is scheduled for April 11 and is open to the public.

Public input meeting for PARD’s long range planning - central Austin

submitted by Steven Zettner

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department is holding a public input meeting next Monday for the Central part of the City to gather feedback on priorities.  See info below.  This will cover Allandale, Crestview, Brentwood, Rosedale and other Central Austin neighborhoods.

PARD currently does not prioritize park acquisition based on nearby residential density.  That means any new density added along Burnet or Anderson in the future will not be supported with open space, including pedestrian and bike paths.  Getting the City’s parks policy in line with the City’s land use and transit policies is going to take some effort.  This meeting is a great place to start. If you have time, I hope you will attend.
