In late October, City crews resurfaced Great Northern Boulevard. This week they re-striped it. The asphalt is smooth and the striping is very visible making it safer for walkers, joggers and cyclists. A side benefit of the project is it cleared out a lot of the brush that had grown up through the pavement and over the curb onto the road. The challenge now is to keep it cleared, a job the Beautification Committee has taken on in the past.
Boy Scout Troop 410 (sponsored by Highland Park Baptist Church) is once again selling its six-foot tall candy canes that you see in yards accross the neighborhood during the holidays. But in addition there
is something new: a smaller, 3-foot tall version as well.
The candy canes look spectacular at night with a floodlight on them. The troop is requesting $50 per six-foot tall candy cane with a $5 discount ($45 per cane) for two or more. They are requesting $35 per 3-foot tall candy cane.
You may purchase your candy cane or pick up your preordered cane on November 25 from 2-4 p.m. or December 1 from 1-4 p.m. at 4701 Balcones Dr.

The McCallum Football Knights season ended last Friday night in College Station, when they took on the Waller Bulldogs from District 18 4A. When the final whistle blew the Knights were sent packing with a 41 to 20 loss.
The game looked like it was going to be an offensive showdown with both teams being able to move the ball down the field with ease. McCallum’s lone score in the first quarter was a touchdown pass from Kevin Lusson to Xavier Jefferson. Unfortunately the Knights defense could not stop the Bulldogs running game, and trailed at the end of the first quarter 14 to 7.
If you were wondering why the crowds on Burnet Rd around Clay Ways Sunday afternoon, it's because people were lining up to participate in the Austin Empty Bowl Project hosted every year at Clay Ways.
It's a wonderful event to raise money for the Austin Capitol Area Food Bank. Judging from the line of people waiting to get in, they raised a pile of money. This is a big event. There are a number of sponsors, donors and volunteers that work together to pull it off.

Tango, a latin dance form where the pauses… are as important as the movement is something I only know from the movies, (I recommend “Asasination Tango” with Robert Duval), but it’s not something you come across here in Allandale. So when I learned that Laura Pelligrino, a tango dancer, teacher, and professional musician was moving into the neighborhood I had to satisfy my curiosity. Laura and her dance partner Ector Gutierrez added interest to the Allandale Masquerade Ball by performing two dances. We visited last week where I was able to learn more about what it takes to tango.
And now we wait... until mid-December to learn Judge Orlinda Naranjo's decision on the two and one-half day RG4N trial that concluded today. The Austin Chronicle's Lee Nichols, a writer who lives in Crestview, sat through the entire trial. You can read the highlights in his blog on the trial. We should all be appreciative of getting the digest version. Judging from his account, it was long and mostly boring. Thursday's Austin Chronicle also included an article about the Northcross project by Michael King, "Point Austin: Whose City Is It? Northcross Wal-Mart
fight about a lot more than a site plan." There are two points the article makes: one is don't diss The Austin Chronicle in court - they'll
write about it, and two, if Lincoln, the City, and Wal-Mart win and a Supercenter goes in at Northcross it will be remembered as a victory for the big monied out-of-towners.
You will find the Austin American-Statesman's wrap-up of the trial in the following article: "Trial ends in Wal-Mart case: Judge expects to rule in mid-December," by Sarah Coppola.
The Responsible Growth for Northcross (RG4N) trial got underway today. Both the Statesman and the Austin Chronicle posted stories about day one of the trial on their websites. And while Wal-Mart is pushing to get into our neighborhood, they've decided against moving forward on plans to build a Supercenter in downtown Tulsa (read story here).

Thanks to everyone who has helped out with this very long and involved effort to prevent a Wal-Mart Supercenter from becoming a part of Allandale. The fight has gone on for over a year now. It has been a major resource drain and we have legal bills to pay. Judge Margaret Cooper ruled yesterday that City was not obligated to hold a public hearing in the approval process for Lincoln's site plan at Northcross (read today's article in the Statesman). That said, the fight is not over. This is still not a done dea. The RG4N trial is on for Tuesday, November 13.

The City of Austin is seeking public input on the overhaul of its web site. The objective
of the overhaul is to make city government more open to
residents. The survey will be followed up with town hall meetings and
focus groups in early 2008. The City's current site, Austin City Connection, serves as an Internet
portal to City departments, services and government functions. You will find more information about this initiative here as well as a link to the survey.

There was no court ruling that came out of today's hearing on ANA's case for a motion of summary judgment on the Lincoln site plan. After about 1 1/2 hours of the two sides arguing their case, Judge Margaret Cooper said she would take it under advisement and issue a ruling within the next 2 to 3 weeks. There is speculation that it could come sooner given RG4N's trial date is set for November 13th.
