Today's Statesman Opinion on the Northcross Development
In today's Austin American-Statesman the lead editorial on the Opinion page concerns the Northcross Redevelopment. In it, "Public process betters Northcross Wal-Mart," the Statesman concludes the result of the back and forth between the developer, the City, the neighborhoods, and Wal-Mart has resulted in a plan that will benefit the City, shoppers, Wal-Mart and Northcross.

No matter who goes in the mall, if it is a successful venture, don't you think that traffic would still be bad? Wal-Mart has made changes at the request of some residents. You should be thankful that they did anything at all. They didn't have to, you know. They are trying to be a good neighbor and now it's time for you to be one, too. Live with it, as it IS a done deal.

This is quite an obnoxious and untrue fluff piece. I recall that a Wal Mart rep told me that they weren't going to change the hours or size but the facade was going to be so nice! It will be closed from 1-5am- big whoop! 192,000 square feet is hardly a quaint little store...the traffic which WILL cut through our neighborhoods (sans sidewalks) is a serious thing and the editorial just brushes it off. Thus far, Nightmare Sally (an apt moniker) and some of her buddies are the only ones for Wal Mart.
