New Officers Elected - Minutes from September General Meeting

submitted by Kay Newell

Gretchen Vaden Nagy, President of the Allandale Neighborhood Association, opened the September 2006 General Meeting.

Main Library - Proposition 6
Gretchen introduced David Mintz - City of Austin   Library Commission Chair and former President of ANA. David spoke about the need for a new main library to provide all of Austin with a stronger library system. The current main library opened in the 1970's, since then the library system has grown from 11 locations to 22. This has caused a great deal of strain on the main library.

Meet the Board Members

What follows are brief profiles of some of our current Allandale Neighborhood Association Board members. It's in a Q&A format. I asked them to submit a photo because it helps put a face to the names that keep showing up in the newsletter and on the website. Some did. I'm still working on the others. Check back. The profiles are not listed in any particular order.   (Continue Reading "Meet the Board Members.")

Mac Rolls On

The McCallum Knights took one more step on their march toward the playoffs last Friday night at House Park. The Knights took on the Johnston Rams, and when the night was over, the Knights were victorious 69 to 6.

After the Rams received the opening kickoff and were unable to produce any kind of a drive, the Knights offense took to the field and jumped out in the lead 7-0 behind the running of Marcus Mann, and the leg of Paul Tearson. The Knights never looked back going into the locker room at halftime leading the Rams 55 to 0. (Continue reading Mac Rolls On...)

ANA Executive Committee Meeting 8-30-2006

Ana_meeting_83006Gretchen opened the meeting and said the sale of the Farmers Market on Burnet is scheduled to close in September.

Budget

Paul Nagy, Treasurer, presented the budget. Allandale Neighborhood Association (ANA) has a balance of $31,650 and no payables. Two thirds of this amount is in a savings account and one third is in checking. Out of 3100 households in Allandale only 270 households are current members of the neighborhood association. Membership dues provide income of approximately $2300 a year. ANA gives $500 annually to Lamar and $500 to Gullett. With Lucy Read School now an active school, ANA will also vote on giving $500 to Lucy Read. This year ANA also gave an additional $500 to Gullett for The Teaching Garden.

Filming on Burnet behind the Omelettr

Set2submitted by Cindy Gustin

This afternoon I saw a huge crane off of Burnet   Rd. with lights atop them, then spied a "Set" sign by the Omelettry. I went down there tonight (9/19) to see what was going on and found out that a movie called "Grind House," which will consist of 2 segements, is being filmed there. One segment is called "Planet Terror" (zombie theme) and was directed by Robert Rodriquez (I believe the filming of this part was completed in Austin earlier this year). The second segment is a slasher called "Death Proof" and is being directed by Quentin Tarantino now. I saw Mr. Tarantino sitting in a director's chair. I waited around to watch them make fake rain (if they had been here several nights ago they could have saved themselves a whole lot of trouble!). There were also 3 Chevy Novas in the parking lot, all alike and with the same license plate number. I have no idea how that figures into the story! Attached are some of the photos I took.

A Day in the Park

The Knights Start Their Quest

FOR DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH WIN

The McCallum Knights started their run for district champs with a win over the Lanier Vikings last Thursday night at Nelson Field. McCallum held on in spite of Lanier’s valiant effort to tie the game up in the last few minutes, and came out ahead on the scoreboard 31 to 24. McCallum started the game off with a touchdown on its first possession on a 25-yard pass and completion from Daniel McElrath to Chris Bowser, adding the point after by Paul Tearson the score was 7-0 Knights. The September Allandale Neighbor

I just uploaded September's newsletter. You will find this one along with past issues on the site. Thanks to all who helped prepare it.

The Allandale Independence Day Parade was the top story in the September newsletter. Joe Reynolds, this year's parade organizer, recounts the morning parade and the many people who contributed to its success - there are pictures too. But that's not all. McCallum Knights Fall Short Against The Maroons

submitted by Tom Davis

The McCallum Knight Football teams took on the Austin High Maroons last Thursday and Friday evenings in a battle of 4A and 5A hopefuls. The Knights representing district 17-4A, lost to the Austin Maroons representing district 25-5A, 17 to 0 last Friday night at House Park. McCallum’s offense could not get on track, against a swarming Austin defense. The Knights leading rusher Marcus Mann was held to just 34 yards, and the Knights passing was held to 154 yards total. The Maroons were lead by senior quarterback Cameron Jones who had 114 rushing and 145 passing yards. (Continue reading "McCallum Knights Fall Short... )

The Future of Mopac

Neighborhood Crime Stats

Crime in Allandale for the last 6 months is down compared to the same period last year. Pulling from the City's online crime database, the number of incidents police were called to and submitted a formal written report on totaled 624 compared to 753 in 2005. As always, burglary of vehicles (77 incidents) and Theft (67 incidents) ranked at the top of the list. While this is worrisome, it's helpful to know that over half of the burglaries of vehicles took place in parking lots and business establishments as opposed to residences, and most of the thefts were from businesses. Nevertheless, there were a total of 22 burglary of residences in the last 6 months. This compares 20 burglaries in 2005.
