McCallum Varsity Came Up Short Against the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars

McCallum hosted the Canyon Cougars at House Park last Friday night in a rematch of last year’s only regular season loss for the Knights.

The first quarter of the game looked like the fans were going to be in store for another defensive battle game. Both teams exchanged three downs and out possessions with the exception of McCallum completing a 30-yard pass ...

which lead to the Knights attempting a 30+ yard field goal that was unsuccessful.

The second quarter was a continuation of the duel of the defenses. The Knights defense provided some promising moments with Broderick Marshall forcing and recovering a Cougar fumble. McCallum's offense was unable to capitalize on the turnover due to extensive penalties. On the next Cougar possession, the Knights defense held the Cougars in check, with Josh Benavidez blocking a Cougar punt. The Knights were able to capitalize on this turnover with Paul Tearson kicking a go-ahead field goal. The half ended with McCallum on top 3-0.

The second half had the Cougars with their first possession getting the go ahead touchdown with the point after failing. McCallum’s defense continued to keep the game close with Paul Tearson intercepting a Cougar pass, but the offense again was unable to make anything out of the turnover.  On the very next possession, the Cougars broke a long run for the touchdown, which proved to be the nail in the coffin for McCallum. The Knights offense tried to mount a strike with Michael Miranda catching a clutch first down pass. Trey Henderson, on a quarterback keeper, scampered for 9 yards to the end zone, but fumbled.  Luckily, Marcus Mann was on the spot to fall on the ball for the touchdown. McCallum attempted to get the deficit to 3 but failed on the two-point conversion. The Knights continued to fight and attempted an on-side kick, but the Cougars maintained control and they were able to finish out the game. The final score was New Braunfels 14, McCallum 9.

The Knights take on the Dripping Springs Tigers this Friday night at 7:30pm at House Park.

 

McCallum JV Succumbs to the Canyon Cougars

The McCallum JV traveled south to New Braunfels Canyon High last Thursday night to do battle with the Canyon Cougars. McCallum not only had to battle a strong Cougar team but what seemed at times to be a biased officiating crew. The Knights found themselves behind after the Cougars opening offensive possession and soon in a hole they couldn't get out of despite coming close after a long run by Van Franks. Other highlights were produced by performances of Jonathan Fisher and Jarred Houston.

The McCallum JV travels to Dripping Springs Thursday at 7:30 to play the JV Tigers. Best of Luck to the Knights!!!

 

 McCallum Freshmen Lose to New BraunfelsCanyon Cougars

The McCallum Freshman football team visited the "Cougar Country" of New Braunfels Canyon last Thursday, September 8, and gave a valiant effort in a 28 to 19 loss. Canyon drew first blood with a 17 yard run for a score in the first quarter, but in the 2nd quarter the Knights had a sustained drive, which included a 12 yard pass to Xavier Jefferson. Ben Olasky then passed again to Jefferson for a 4-yard touchdown. Canyon then scored late in the second quarter on a 35 yard run to lead at the half 13 to 6 .The Knights opened up the second half with a drive capped off by a 47 yard run by quarterback Olasky, only to have Canyon score right before the end of the third quarter to make it 21 to 13. The fourth quarter had drives by McCallum stalled by a fumble and interception, while Canyon scored again for a 28 to 13 lead. With only 2:35 left in the game, McCallum made a late surge with a Canyon punt attempt resulting in a fumble recovery in the end zone for a score. They attempted but couldn't pull off the ensuing onside kick. Canyon was able to run out the clock for the win. Offensive stars for the Knights were Ben Olasky, wide receivers Xavier Jefferson and Jordan Cole, while defensive starters Hudson Stancliff and David Pool led the team in tackles.

The Knights Freshmen travel to Dripping Springs for a Thursday evening game against the Tigers Freshman team.
