Safe Routes to School Meeting

The Lamar PTA is going to discuss Student Pedestrian/Bicycle, Safe Routes to School at their next general meeting, Monday, November 16, 2009, 7:00 - 8 PM in the Lamar Middle School Cafeteria, 6201 Wynona, Austin, TX 78753. The meeting is open to Lamar families, community neighbors, local businesses and Lamar administrators & faculty. This is an opportunity to discuss pedestrian and bicycle safety routes for Lamar students coming and going to school.

Jackie O'Keefe's Yard

In October's issue of Allandale Neighbor we introduced you to Jackie O'Keefe, a longtime Allandale resident and natural gardener who premiered her column on native gardening in the Newsletter. Hatcreek Burger's now open for business

Hatcreek Burgers opened last week occupying the building that was formerly Arby's. Fortunately, Hatcreek was able to reuse the Arby's sign. Early reviews of their burgers have been good. Here is a link to an earlier posting about the local restaurant.

HEB Expansion Plans

HEB is moving forward with remodeling their store in Allandale Village. Representatives of the store will be meeting with the Allandale Neighborhood Association's Executive Committee on Thursday, November 19, to discuss their plans. Notices have been mailed to nearby property owners. Hangtown Grill in Allandale Village Closed

Hangtown Grill closed last week. The restaurant did everything to make a go of it from offering $3 burgers to holding a Wednesday night open mike night but the location just did not work for them. Hangtown opened up in Allandale Village in July of 2008. Other restaurants that have opened and closed in that location include Dry Dock and Romeo's. As the sign on their door says, their location in Westlake remains open. Is it the location or the just the wrong restaurant?

Krimelabb Presentation

Krimelabb presentation that was Sat. 10/17 at 2pm at North Village library

It was so beautiful on Saturday and the UT game wasn't over by 2pm that we were lucky we got a few people at the Krimelabb presentation.

Jack Darby presented to a small but enthusiastic crowd of 5 (and 4 neighborhood associations were represented - Highland, NShoalCreek, Wooten and Allandale). It was very worthwhile learning about how Jack uses data from APD and synthesizes it in www.krimelabb.com. He does not send out e-mails like Spotcrime, but we can go to the site and look up crime information from all over Austin since 2007. The site gives specific addresses (unless it's a rape case) and case numbers, as well as has some mug shots and data to show who has been arrested the most and why in any given area. The site is a good complement to spotcrime and the City of Austin's Crimeviewer.

Jack Darby will be doing another free krimelabb power-user presentation at North Village at 1pm on Nov. 21st and I encourage especially the block captains to attend.
