All,

We will be providing an update on the Allandale Storm Drain project next week on Thursday, December 17, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The neighborhood meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., and we'll be giving our update around 7 p.m. Details are below:

The regular monthly Executive Committee (EC) meeting of the Allandale Neighborhood Association (ANA) was held on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 6:30 pm at Covenant Hall, 2nd Floor, Covenant Presbyterian Church, the President being in the chair and the Secretary being present. 

In attendance were:  Donna Beth McCormick, President; Peggy Maceo, Vice-President; Mary Jean Matus, Secretary; Diane Swinney, Treasurer; Paulette Kern, Dan Diener, Jason Kloc, George Roman 

The meeting was called to order at 6:40 pm.

Making a candy cane

The Allandale Candy Cane Lane tradition was started in the 60’s by the residents along Bullard. The tradition is to leave the candy cane for the next home owner. You might find candy canes in your attics or under your homes. A fresh coat of paint, and you will be carrying on the Allandale Candy Cane Lane tradition. Enjoy!

Supplies:
2 stove pipe elbows
3 straight pieces of stove pipe
1 spray can of white Rust-Oleum paint (or similar paint)
1 spray can or small can of red Rust-Oleum paint OR 3inch red outdoor ribbon blue painter’s tape—if you plan to paint on the red stripes
4 ft metal pipe or broom handle
string of Christmas lights OR floodlight and extension cord
red outdoor bow

Put the two elbows together to form a hook, and then add it to the three connected pieces of straight stove pipe. You will then have a 6’ candy cane. 

Lamar Middle School PTA is hosting a free adult enrichment workshop!

“PROJECT WILD” WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS, YOUTH LEADERS, NATURALIST OR TEACHERS K-12. Project WILD is correlated to the TEKS and TAKS. Participants receive 6 hours of SBEC and TEEAC credit.

Whether formal/non-formal educational setting, or youth program or naturalist, Project WILD K-12 curriculum is suitable for classroom, park programs, nature centers, and youth groups can assist you in teaching any subject. 

Allandale Storm Drainage Improvements Project

The City of Austin will be attending Allandale's December EC meeting to provide an update on the Allandale Storm Drain Improvements project scheduled to get underway in 2011. 

According to the City's Fact Sheet on the project, the City has received over 40 requests to address this flooding problem from area residents. The problem area is bounded by White Horse Trail to the north, Burnet Rd on the east, Shoal Creek Blvd on the west, and Allandale Rd to the south. 

Urban Rail Open House - December 14, 2009

All - this is the first open house, and there will be more opportunities to learn about the project. Transportation is tentatively planning a late January series of community-wide Mobility meetings that will encompass Strategic Mobility - roads, bike, trails, and urban rail..

Simplicity Wine & Eats Open for Business

Is Burnet Road ready for a wine and tapas bar? Simplicity Wine & Eats opened last week and judging from the activity in the bar Sunday night, I’d say it looks promising. The new restaurant, located at 4801 Burnet Rd, just a few doors down from the Omelettry, serves a variety of tapas and has a menu of over 70 wines. But…what an odd name for a restaurant. 

Constable’s Notebook – December 2009

During the last year Austin’s unemployment rate has risen from 4.5% to 7.2%. While we have fared better than Texas (8.3%) and the nation (10.2%), thousands of people in the Austin area have lost their jobs, had their hours reduced and their health benefits cut. According to the American Community Survey about 150,000 Austin residents live below the federal poverty rate which is about $21,000 for a family of four or about $10 per hour for a single wage earner.

On Thursday, December 31, 2009, from 4 pm – 12 midnight, you're invited to play a creative role in illuminating downtown Austin. Hundreds of volunteers, 18 years of age or older, are needed this year to help shine a creative light on downtown Austin’s transformation into an artistic playground. The stage will be the city's plazas, parks, streets, storefronts, and building facades. Building, bridges and streets will become giant canvases. Indoor venues will be setting for a palette of performing and visual arts. You can help make this happen by taking part for only a few hours!
